Lunas Exoplanetarias Habitables?
14/01/2007Los ambientes propicios para la vida no se limitan únicamente a los planetas parecidos a la Tierra que se encuentran en la zona “Ricitos de Oro”.

A medida que los científicos refinan sus métodos, los exoplanetas se van haciendo más y más fáciles de detectar. La cuenta actual es de 163 planetas orbitando 97 estrellas de la secuencia principal, de los cuales solamente uno es remotamente parecido a la Tierra. Todos los otros son cuerpos masivos, que van desde diminutos “Uranos” (con unas 15 masas terrestres) hasta los “súper-Júpiteres” que llegan a alcanzar miles de masas terrestres.
La detección directa de planetas tipo Tierra alrededor de estrellas como nuestro Sol deberán esperar hasta el lanzamiento de satélites especialmente dedicados, tales como COROT y Kepler (agendados para 2006 y 2008, respectivamente). Entretanto, algunos investigadores han comenzado a preguntarse si estos gigantes gaseosos extrasolares podrían albergar lunas habitables.
Nuestro propio sistema solar posee cuatro gigantes gaseosos, y cada uno de ellos ha sido bendecido con abundancia de satélites. Todas estas lunas son mucho menores que la Tierra, pero seis de ellas podrían calificar como planetas de propio derecho si orbitaran alrededor del Sol: los cuatro satélites galileanos de Júpiter (Io, Europa, Ganímedes y Calixto), Titán en Saturno y Tritón en Neptuno. Se sabe que Europa tiene grandes cantidades de hielo de agua, y Titán presenta una atmósfera espesa. Si nuestro sistema solar no es atípico, muchos de los exoplanetas conocidos poseen también ricos sistemas lunares.
Caleb Scharf, director de astrobiología de la Universidad de Columbia, ha estado explorando las condiciones necesarias para que tales lunas sean habitables. Su trabajo reciente investiga las condiciones para que una luna contenga el agua suficiente como para sustentar vida, a temperaturas capaces de sostener actividad biológica.

Bajo condiciones de presión cero, el hielo de agua se sublimará (es decir, se transformará directamente de sólido a vapor) a temperaturas mayores a 170ºK (-103ºC). Esto significa que los proto-planetas ricos en agua deberán formarse relativamente lejos de su estrella, bien por fuera de la “zona habitable” tradicional donde la radiación estelar eleva la temperatura lo suficiente como para la existencia de agua líquida.
Es probable también que los gigantes gaseosos se formen en estas heladas regiones, de modo que es muy probable que los exoplanetas conocidos hayan adquirido una o más lunas heladas desde el principio. Estas lunas heladas podrían ser trasladadas más tarde a regiones más cálidas, a medida que el planeta anfitrión migra hacia el interior del sistema.
¿Qué sucederá entonces con el agua? La respuesta depende principalmente del tamaño de la luna. Un satélite o planeta con aproximadamente el 10% de la masa de la Tierra posee la gravedad suficiente como para retener vapor de agua y otros gases en una atmósfera templada. Como contrapartida, Venus posee la gravedad suficiente pero es demasiado caliente como para retener el agua; la velocidad de las moléculas de agua en su atmósfera excede la velocidad de escape del planeta. Los satélites del tamaño de Marte o más podrán, por lo tanto, sustentar tanto atmósfera como agua líquida, si su planeta anfitrión no está demasiado lejos de la estrella.

Scharf puede demostrar que tales lunas pueden seguir siendo habitables a distancias mayores que las que lo permitirían para un planeta similar, gracias al proceso de calentamiento por marea. Como la gravedad se debilita con la distancia, el tirón del planeta anfitrión será ligeramente diferente en los lados cercano y lejano de la luna. Si la órbita del satélite es circular, este diferencial gravitatorio será constante, y la luna puede ajustarse al mismo cambiando ligeramente de forma.
Sin embargo, cuando un satélite viaja por una órbita excéntrica alrededor de su planeta, se aproxima y se aleja a intervalos regulares. Por lo tanto, el diferencial gravitatorio cambia ligeramente a medida que el satélite orbita, lo que resulta en una compresión rítmica del núcleo de la luna.
En otras palabras, el planeta anfitrión “amasará” la luna como a un trozo de masa de pan. La actividad generará un montón de calor, aún cuando el núcleo del satélite no esté fundido. “Básicamente, se está drenando la energía rotatoria del planeta paterno”, explica Scharf. En el caso de Júpiter, esa energía rotatoria es enorme, más que suficiente como para sustentar indefinidamente niveles moderados de calentamiento por marea. Para mantener la excentricidad de sus órbitas lunares, el exoplaneta ideal tendrá múltiples satélites en sus proximidades (tales como los satélites galileanos de Júpiter).
Para ilustrar la potencia de este proceso, Scharf ofrece el ejemplo siguiente: “Si se tomara a Marte y se lo colocara donde Europa está ahora, su temperatura superficial aumentaría en varios grados gracias al calentamiento por marea. Probablemente, esto también reiniciaría su actividad volcánica”.
El calentamiento por marea podría dar una inyección extra de energía a las lunas que reciben demasiada poca luz de la estrella del sistema como para descongelarse. Scharf descubrió que, bajo condiciones favorables, un satélite del tamaño de la Tierra podría alcanzar temperaturas habitables a una distancia doblemente mayor que la que hay desde la Tierra al Sol.
Sin embargo, en su mayoría, las lunas del sistema solar no son lo suficientemente grandes como para sostener una atmósfera. Ganímedes es la mayor, con aproximadamente 0,025 (1/40) masas terrestres. Por lo tanto, Scharf postula que serán mucho más probables las lunas habitables tales como Europa.
