Un volcán islandés mató a miles de… egipcios

El volcán Laki, en Islandia, sufrió una serie de diez erupciones entre junio de 1783 y febrero de 1784, que produjeron cambios notables en la circulación de las corrientes de aire en el Hemisferio Norte. Esto alteró el régimen de temperaturas y precipitaciones en gran parte de Europa. Se cree que las sustancias tóxicas expulsadas a la atmósfera pudieron causar un incremento de la mortalidad en Inglaterra, que se produjo en la misma época. En la propia Islandia murieron 10.000 personas.
Ahora unos investigadores de las Universidades de New Jersey y Edimburgo han determinado que el volcán islandés Laki fue el causante de la sequía que asoló el Valle del Nilo en el verano de 1783, empobreciendo las cosechas y causando miles de víctimas por hambre.
Los científicos han aplicado un programa desarrollado por el Goddard Institute for Space Studies, de la NASA, para crear un modelo en cascada de los efectos de la erupción en la atmósfera, hasta comprobar que el gran descenso de precipitaciones en el Sahel y en la cabecera del Nilo pudo ser causado por el volcán islandés.
El impacto del Laki sobre el clima se debió principalmente a la emisión de grandes cantidades de dióxido de azufre, que combinadas con el vapor de agua crean unas partículas (aerosoles de sulfato) que reducen la llegada a la tierra de radiación solar y provocan un descenso de las temperaturas.
El gráfico muestra de forma esquemática el comportamiento de la atmósfera frente a una erupción volcánica
Según el modelo aplicado en la investigación, en el verano de 1783 la temperatura media en el Hemisferio Norte fue 3ºC inferior a la normal. Este descenso redujo la diferencia de temperatura entre las masas continentales de Eurasia y Africa y los océanos Indico y Atlántico, disminuyendo la capacidad de los monzones para aportar nubes y agua de lluvia a las cuencas de los ríos.
“Los monzones son provocados por el hecho de que la tierra se calienta y se enfría más rápido que el agua. Por lo tanto, en verano, la tierra alcanza una temperatura mayor que el océano. Esto hace que el aire sobre la tierra comience a subir, provocando un área de baja presión. Como el viento sopla desde áreas de alta presión hacia áreas de baja presión, un viento extremadamente constante sopla desde el océano. La lluvia es producida por el aire húmedo elevándose en las montañas y enfriándose posteriormente.”

Por otra parte, la ausencia de nubes, causada por la debilidad del monzón, permite que sea mayor la radiación solar que llega a la tierra, aumentando la evaporación.
Por todo ello, y en contraste con la bajada de temperaturas en el norte, la debilidad de los monzones produjo durante el verano de 1783 en el Sahel, Arabia y la India, un aumento de la temperatura media entre 1 y 2ºC.
En definitiva, la crecida anual del Nilo, imprescindible para producir la cosecha, fue muy baja en 1783.
Un intelectual francés de aquella época, Constantin Volney, escribió:
“La crecida anual del Nilo de 1783 no fue suficiente, gran parte de las tierras no pudieron ser sembradas por falta de riego y otra parte tuvo el mismo problema por escasez de semillas. En 1784, el Nilo volvió a no crecer lo necesario y enseguida la penuria llegó a ser insoportable. Mucho antes del fin de noviembre, la hambruna se había llevado en el Cairo casi tanta gente como una plaga”
Se cree que la sexta parte de la población del Valle del Nilo pereció aquel año. Y todo a causa de la erupción de un volcán en Islandia.
El sistema Grímsvötn, al que pertenece el Laki, se mantiene activo. En 1998 tuvo una erupción, de la que pueden ver unas preciosas imágenes en 1998 Grímsvötn Eruption.

If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass’ favor.

The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like ‘Mixview’ that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you’re listening to. Speaking of users, the Zune “Social” is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.

Your RSS feed doesn’t work in my browser (google chrome) how can I fix it?
The Zune concentrates on being a Portable Media Player. Not a web browser. Not a game machine. Maybe in the future it’ll do even better in those areas, but for now it’s a fantastic way to organize and listen to your music and videos, and is without peer in that regard. The iPod’s strengths are its web browsing and apps. If those sound more compelling, perhaps it is your best choice.

I was wondering if you ever considered changing the layout of your blog? Its very well written; I love what youve got to say. But maybe you could a little more in the way of content so people could connect with it better. Youve got an awful lot of text for only having one or two images. Maybe you could space it out better?
